Music and the arts are an extremely important part of the whole development of young children as well as providing a platform from which their creativity can blossom.

Arts Activity Boxes draw from the seven areas of learning and development of the EYFS and reflect the three characteristics of effective teaching and learning playing and exploring, creating and thinking critically, and active learning):

  • Physical development
  • Literacy
  • Communication and language
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Expressive arts and design

And the Level 1 descriptors of the National Curriculum for Music at Key Stage 1:

  • Recognise and explore how sounds can be made and changed.
  • Use voices in different ways
  • Perform with awareness of others.
  • Repeat rhythmic and melodic patterns.
  • Create and choose sounds appropriately
  • Respond to different moods in music.
  • Recognise changes in sounds.
  • Identify simple repeated patterns.
  • Follow musical instructions.

Adults should use the boxes to extend their own skills and talents in developing the children they work with. The boxes can provide short circle time activities as well as inspiration for larger projects and activities.

In addition to the props, resources and ideas in this box, children will need access to a selection of instruments to enhance their musical experiences. Appropriate instruments can include claves, maracas, cage bells, castanets, rainmakers, small hand drums and tambourines.

The box can be added to with your own props and resources to build an even bigger bank of ideas and creative approaches to delivering the EYFS, KS1 National Curriculum and circle time activities.

Songs can be adapted to use different vocabulary and to fit the props available. Extra verses can be added or words can be changed to suit. Suggested art, role-play and other activities can be adapted to suit different songs and ages.
